Education: Elections, Leadership and the Power of History: Teaching for Civic Agency

As the United States enters the 2022 mid-term election season and countries around the world undergo changes in leadership, racism, antisemitism, and other forms of bigotry—which were at the root of so much of the inhumanity of the twentieth century—have not gone away. These ideas continue to influence how people participate in the election of their leaders and shape their understanding of various issues. 

How can learning about the history of Nazi Germany and various societies in which civil democracy was threatened, educate us about our civic responsibilities in the world today? 

Join Facing History and Ourselves, the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education, and Classroom Law Project to explore frameworks, resources, and teaching strategies that empower students to be active members in a civil democracy. While some students may not be of voting age yet, the civic education they cultivate now will hone their choices on which leaders to vote for and their stances on various issues.  

Participants will receive resources, teaching strategies and examples of student-centered civic action projects that inspire students to use their voices, strengthen their civic agency, and choose to participate in democracy today.

As a result of this workshop, educators will:

  • Explore our new Facing History resource “From Reflection to Action: A Choosing to Participate Toolkit.”
  • Receive information about OJMCHE’s digital experience Discrimination and Resistance, An Oregon Primer.
  • Access Classroom Law Project’s free, digital civics curriculum resources in the Educator Resource Community.  
  • Walk away with examples of student-led civic action projects that will empower them to take meaningful action in their communities based on the legacy of the Holocaust and various significant historical moments
  • Learn a new way of structuring curriculum to help students connect history to their own lives and the choices they make today.
  • Practice teaching strategies and classroom activities that reinforce historical thinking and critical literacy skills.
