Before introducing a lesson or unit on genocide, an educator must reflect on their rationale—why is it important to teach these histories? It is not enough to simply teach about genocide; lessons should encourage students to learn from genocide. In this session, educators will be introduced to the Learning Concepts mandated in the bill, given grade level guidance for how to approach and teach these histories alongside current content standards, and learn about available resources and classroom learning opportunities for teaching this content.
This session is part of the Unpacking SB664 program series, a range of asynchronous and synchronous professional developments aimed at supporting the learning and teaching of Oregon’s Holocaust and Genocide studies K-12 education mandate.
