Education: Unpacking SB664 – History Unfolded with Eric Schmalz, Citizen History Community Manager, USHMM

August 19, 2021

August 19, 2021 | 10:30 – 11:30 am

This interactive session will introduce participants to the History Unfolded: US Newspapers and the Holocaust citizen history project. History Unfolded invites teachers, students, and history buffs to conduct authentic historical research into how local newspapers in Oregon and the rest of the United States reported on the Nazi threat during the 1930s and 1940s. Participating citizen historians learn about a number of Holocaust-era events, research local newspapers on microfilm or via digitized collections, and submit their findings to a database of now over 35,000 published submissions. During this session,  attendees will learn why the museum began History Unfolded, the value of the research, as well as practical tips for how to implement the project in a number of different learning environments. Participants will have a chance to research newspaper collections during the session and ask questions.

This session is part of the Unpacking SB664 program series, a range of asynchronous and synchronous professional developments aimed at supporting the learning and teaching of Oregon’s Holocaust and Genocide studies K-12 education mandate.
