February 24, 2021 | 5:30-6:30pm
The Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education’s Student Advisory Board is hosting a Book & Film Circle series. Open to students in grades 9 – 12, each program brings youth participants together to explore films and books covering topics related to the museum’s core exhibitions and mission. This year, the Book & Film Circle will be covering three topics: racial justice, Holocaust education, and Indigenous narratives. In an ever-changing country filled with political turmoil, understanding our histories is the only way for us to move forward.
Our first session will be on Wednesday, February 24th from 5:30 – 6:30pm. Prior to attending, participants are asked to watch the 2016 documentary I Am Not Your Negro and/or read the book Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates. The film focuses on the lives and work of civil rights leaders including Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., and James Baldwin. The book is written as a letter to the author’s son sharing the realities of living as a Black person in the United States. During the program, participants will have an opportunity to reflect and discuss the messages in the book and movie and how they relate to today’s political climate and continuing movements for racial justice.
Note: The film is available on tubi and vudu for free and on Netflix with a subscription.
After RSVPing, you will receive an email 24 hours prior to the event with a zoom link. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this event, please contact education@ojmche.org.
