July 25 – 28 | 40 PDUs with an option to also receive Graduate Credits* through Portland State University
Holocaust education is now required in twenty-two states, including Oregon. Studying the Holocaust allows us to grapple with profound moral questions raised by history and foster skills in ethical reasoning, critical thinking, empathy, and civic engagement. Teaching the Holocaust requires a high level of sensitivity, care, and awareness of the complexity of the subject matter. This four-day program is for Oregon pre-service, middle, and high school educators who have been teaching about the Holocaust for less than five years.
In this workshop, educators will:
- Learn about and expand their knowledge of Oregon’s Holocaust and Genocide education requirement, the history of the Holocaust, and how to help students connect history to their own lives and the choices they make
- Increase their ability to facilitate productive critical conversations around discrimination and resistance
- Explore curricular strategies and classroom-ready resources that highlight local connections for both ELA and Social Science classrooms
- Develop a network of educators, along with OJMCHE, who will support their work in classroom
Selected educators will receive books, four nights accommodation, breakfast and lunch each day, and one dinner.
Applications due April 28, 2023. Selected participants will be notified by May 12, 2023.
*The program, in partnership with Portland State University, will be able to offer 1, 2, or 3 Graduate Level credit options for completing the requirements of the full course. Educators who register for the credit(s) will be responsible for paying the cost directly to PSU. The cost is $265 per credit, plus a $25 fee for educators who are new to taking PSU classes.
This program is made possible through funding from The Sarah Cohen-Doherty Human Rights Education Fund.
